RIP Whitney
I woke up this morning to the devastating news that one of my favourite singers of all time, Whitney Houston, had sadly died last night.
Apparently ambulances were called to her hotel room at the Beverly Hills Hilton, where she was later pronounced dead. It hasn’t been said yet what the cause of death was, but some reports say she was found in the bath tub. This really is so upsetting. I remember Whitney’s I Will Always Love You was the first ever single I bought. She had such an amazing voice and inspired so many people. I’ve never been much of a singer but still, it’s always Whitney who I try to impersonate when I’m in the shower or performing in the mirror with my hairbrush.
Whenever my friends came to play when I was little I always put on the tape of her version of I Know Him So Well, from the musical Chess. It’s much better than the Elaine Page rendition and the duet is with her mum, Cissy Houston. I had to dig it out and play it this morning, which brought a tear to my eye. I couldn’t help but imagine the impact that all her music has had on the world. Just think of the number of X Factor contestants, or American Idol hopefuls, who sing her songs so passionately each year. She’s a musical role model for all of them. It’s such a shame that she had to die at such a premature age.
For some reason it seems that a lot of these great musicians often pass away before their time. I just hope that her music will last for ever so that generations to come will still be able to pretend to be her with their hairbrushes.
